Great Migration
8-Day Great Migration Adventure
Binoculars are hardly necessary when you’re in the endless plains of Serengeti National Park.
It’s no wonder you can spend up to four days in this park and still leave with a desire to stay longer and enjoy its many wonders. From witnessing the unique Great Migration of herbivores to taking balloon safaris, you will never regret spending your money and precious time in this park—truly one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is globally renowned for the Great Wildlife Migration, where around two million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes roam its vast plains. It is also home to the Big Five. The Serengeti ecosystem hosts the largest lion population in Africa, thanks in part to the abundance of prey. It is also painted with scenic and spectacular landscapes, making it a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Additionally, Serengeti is home to diverse birdlife, unique plant species, and fascinating insects.
🗓️ Day-by-Day Itinerary
After all custom formalities, you will appear at the arrival area where you will meet Know-Tanzania Tour drivers holding a signboard with your booking names. After checking that you have all your luggage and belongings, the driver will take you and transfer you to the lodge/hotel. It is recommended to have one day off after arrival in the hotel that can be used to relief the jetlag as well as acclimatization. The same day will also be used pre-trek briefing and gear testing/verification at your hotel/lodge. This means, a client will spend two nights in the hotel and if this is the option, he/she will need to confirm in advance so that this extra night is added in the budget.
After breakfast, you will begin your 240 km journey to Serengeti, a drive that takes approximately 6 hours, crossing the Ngorongoro Highlands. Stop at the crater viewpoint for a scenic view, and optionally visit a Maasai Boma to enjoy traditional dances before proceeding to the Serengeti gate. Serengeti is famous for its rich population of native species, especially the Big Five—elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions, and leopards. The endless plains are divided into different zones. The central area is among the richest wildlife habitats due to the Seronera River, which sustains much of the park’s life. Lunch will be served at the Serengeti gate picnic site, offering great bird-watching opportunities. Afterward, enjoy a half-day game drive before heading to your lodge/camp.
- Dinner and overnight at Kubukubu Tented Lodge / Serengeti Heritage Camp or similar. All meals included.
After breakfast, you will set off from your accommodation facility with packed lunch. The aim of today will be heading to North Serengeti; however, as you head north, you will enjoy and explore the central portion of the Serengeti. The northern portion is quite different from the central portion; you will notice the terrain change from the usual plain grassland to more hilly and broken terrain. The common animals in the northern region include a variety such as buffaloes, gazelles, Leopards, Lions, Topi, and Zebras. A picnic lunch will be taken on your way to the North. If you arrive early in the North, you will spend a few hours glancing at the Mara river before you go to your accommodation for this evening.
- Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Heritage Camp/Ole Serai Luxury Camp – Kogatende/ Singita Mara River Tented Camp or similar. All meals included
After breakfast, we will start our full-day game drive around Serengeti north. Mid-June to September, Serengeti offers the most stunning river crossing of the great migration crossing the Mara River. So, this time of the year, there's a possibility you'll witness the creatures cross the Mara River. Hundreds of thousands of frightened wildebeest congregate on the river's banks, staring longingly across the choppy water at the lush grass on the other side, but no animal moves. All it takes is for one daring wildebeest to literally jump in, and the rest will follow! If it’s your lucky day you will be able to witness this natural wonder and watch nature take its course while some wildebeest drown and a few fall prey to lurking crocodiles. Moreover, the rich green grazing grass of the Masai Mara awaits the animals who successfully dodge the waiting crocodile jaws and cross the river. Sometimes, it may the driver down towards the Lobo valley as he traces the great migration. The unspoiled Lobo valley is characterised by woodlands, plains, hills and famous granite Kopjes and offers a vast amount of lions, leopards and cheetahs. After a long day, your driver will take you back to the Lodge/camp where you will have dinner and spend the night.
- Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Heritage Camp/Ole Serai Luxury Camp – Kogatende/ Singita Mara River Tented Camp or similar. All meals included
Today, you'll return to Central Serengeti after breakfast. Carry a packed lunch for the drive, which takes approximately four hours and includes en route game viewing. Traveling from the Mara River Valley, you’ll pass through Lobo and woodlands before arriving in Seronera. This area is known for its lion prides and excellent year-round game viewing. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed along the way, followed by an afternoon game drive before returning to your lodge/camp.
Dinner and overnight at Kubukubu Tented Lodge / Serengeti Heritage Camp or similar. All meals included.
After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a morning game drive. Optionally, you may book a balloon safari (available at an additional cost).
The balloon safari begins early in the morning and is operated by experienced pilots. After a safety briefing the night before, you’ll be picked up between 4:00–5:00 AM and taken to the launch site. The flight, which lasts around one hour, offers spectacular aerial views of the Serengeti. Following your balloon safari and breakfast in the bush, you will visit Olduvai Gorge, a world-famous archaeological site where Drs. Louis and Mary Leakey discovered early human fossils, including the "Nutcracker Man" and "Handy Man." You’ll also see Maasai rock paintings, Gong Rock, and the Ikoma ruins.
You will then proceed to your lodge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge or similar. All meals included.
After breakfast at around 8:00 AM, drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive with a picnic lunch. The crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and hosts one of Africa’s densest populations of wildlife. It's also among the few places to spot the endangered black rhino in its natural habitat. With the crater’s 2,000 ft. high walls, few animals migrate in or out, making for consistently rich wildlife viewing. Expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, antelopes, and more. After the game drive, ascend the crater and return to Arusha.
- Dinner and overnight at Tulia Hotel and SPA or a similar lodge. All meals included.
Departure Day
On the final day, our client will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport after breakfast. However, if you have extra time before your flight, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Maasai market and pick up unique gifts for your family and friends back home.
